Hello! I’m Jenny Blalock. I’ve always been a dreamer, which is why I liked this picture of myself growing up. It seemed like magic. I remembered it when writing this About page because that is how I view learning as well- it’s the magic that lets us experience other lives and worlds through reading, the magic that can open doors for us and point us down the paths of our lives. It’s how we develop a sense of wonder and curiosity that keeps life fun and interesting.
What I hope to say with this blog about education and learning is that it is vastly more complex, meaningful, powerful, and magical than that which can be measured. I believe in the transformative power of the human imagination and the dignity that is inherent in every child, everywhere. I believe we can do much better in terms of the education we offer our nation’s children.
This blog will be about the future of education in America and will address teaching, learning, technology, policy, inspiration, and research. It is for parents, students, educators, policymakers, and anyone else who cares about these issues.
I’m a native Floridian, a wife and daughter, a mother to two young children, and the youngest of eight siblings. I’m a former middle school teacher and come from a family that includes many educators. I have a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in English Education from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in Education Policy from Florida State University, where I am also a doctoral candidate in Education Policy. Besides my teaching experience, I have worked as a family literacy coordinator, an analyst for the Florida Department of Education, and with Leadership Florida. I have assisted with educational research projects and been a course mentor for master’s degree courses in Educational Leadership. In 2008, I was a Florida Gubernatorial Fellow, working in the Executive Office of the Governor’s Education Policy Unit. In short- I have a wide variety of experience! Improving the education system and increasing learning opportunities are what I am passionate about and my favorite topics to think about and talk about when I am not enjoying time with my family and friends.
